There is a commonly stated idea in education that if we are even able to change 10% of what we do each year to better support student learning, we should consider what we could be doing in 10 years. The typical math class at any grade is often about 50 minutes long, give or take. (Some teachers are lucky enough to have double periods; others have to work within 40-minute periods.) Consider: if we could even do something different — something new, something more student-driven — for just 5 minutes of each class this year, we might be on the way to supporting student learning in a whole new way over time. So, if you are a teacher — what will you do with your 5 minutes?
